Safety in Colors: The Universal Black
By Selma Yalazi

Universal. Versatile. Urban Chic. Slimming.  Donna Karan.  Need I say more, or have you guessed where I am going with these buzz words. Well, if you are still wondering, I am talking about everyone’s favorite fashion color, black.

If we talk about black in other terms rather than fashion, it’s a pretty dreary color associated with death and evil. But to even those far from being a true fashionista, black is stylish and timeless. The color of authority and power and the staple color to any wardrobe. The little black dress, the perfect black trouser, the slimming black top, and of course those “to die” for black shoes, are the basis of everyone’s wardrobe and the items that need the most attention when purchasing.

Wondering where to indulge your shopping budget most? Naturally, in the basics. Go ahead, buy those black Prada pants that you have been lusting over. Your predilection for well fitted, quality, capsule pieces will be obviously apparent.  Buy the best quality you can afford when going black because when you start to pull together looks, you will notice that your less expensive buys will look like a million bucks when paired with quality pieces.

Black carries power, and your  all  black outfit can carry you anywhere. Fashion experts agree that there will never be a "new black".  Black is the height of elegance and sophistication which may tempt us to wear it around the clock. To avoid the goth look, be sure your all ebony attire contains various textures. Pair your leather with soft wool, or satiny pieces with cashmere.  Make sure your black is form fitting and your shoes are elegant. If you choose a chunky boot you are screaming GOTH. Keep it simple and feminine. Your make-up application should be neutrals or pastels, avoid harsh reds or maroons.

Black is safe. But don’t make it a habit, that’s just boring!
